On average, 12 to 15/ 86 people lose their lives on the roads every day.

According to data from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), a total of 5,856 road accidents occurred across the country in 2024, claiming 5,480 lives and injuring more than 7,000 people. In just the first six months of the current year (2025), around 3,000 people have already lost their lives in 3,039 road accidents. This means that, on average, 12 to 15 people are dying on the roads every single day — a deeply alarming reflection of the country’s road safety situation.

However, statistics from various non-governmental organizations and the World Health Organization (WHO) present a far more alarming picture than the official data. According to their estimates, an average of 31,578 people die in road accidents in Bangladesh each year — at least five times higher than government figures. This means that, on average, around 86 people lose their lives on the roads every day. Most of the victims are women, children, and students. The WHO identifies excessive speed, unskilled drivers, faulty road design, and weak law enforcement as the main causes behind these fatalities.
